Main Street Greensburg not only aims to provide various events for the community, but it also promotes commercial growth and beautification of downtown, preserves historic structures and encourages appropriate infill. We offer several programs that help make starting or revitalizing downtown businesses more affordable for owners.
This 2017 project will bring 3 murals, 4 benches, 9 wayfinding signs, and 11 trash/recycling containers to our community. Through a matching grant from IHCDA CreateINg Places and support from crowdfunding platform of Patronicity we were able to raise just over $75,000 to implement this project. A special thank you to the Decatur County Community Foundation for a grant to help us leverage funds. Project updates & information can be found on our social media pages. FACADE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM
Main Street Greensburg offers a $5,000 fifty-fifty matching grant to any building or business owner in Greensburg’s Downtown District. This program provides an incentive for the renovation and preservation of downtown facades. The grant also covers funding for items such as architectural assistance, signage, lighting and awnings. The goal of the grant is to assist new and existing owners with means to develop their buildings/businesses, while helping to preserve downtown’s historic character.

FEDERAL HISTORIC TAX CREDITS
Main Street Greensburg offers assistance for any property owner applying for federal historic preservation tax credits. It is a 20% tax credit for rehabilitations to income-producing properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The rehabilitation must be determined to be a “certified historic structure” by the Secretary of the Interior, through the National Parks Service. Rehabilitations must follow the Secretary’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
More information on federal historic tax credits can be found on the National Parks Service website.
Would you like to commemorate or honor a certain person, family, organization or high school class? Purchase a bench for downtown. Each bench costs $1,500 and comes with a bronze plaque engraved with text of your choice. These are great commemorative pieces that help to beautify our downtown sidewalks.
The following spaces are still available to put a bench:
Denim & Honey/Mayasari's (Broadway)
Stephenson's Jewelry/Stephen Legal Group (Main)
Storie's Restaurant/Bass & Teverbaugh (Main)
Old bank building (Main)
Malone Staffing/Tree City Stitches (Main)
Greensburg Printing (Franklin)
South of Link's in front of the parking lot (Franklin)
HISTORIC PRESERVATION EASEMENTS
A historic preservation easement is a voluntary legal agreement that permanently protects a historic property, usually in the form of a deed. It allows property owners to place restrictions on a historic property and then transfer the restrictions to a willing preservation organization (i.e. Indiana Landmarks). Property owners who donate easements may be eligible for tax benefits. Main Street Greensburg can advise property owners through the process.
More information on historic easements can be found on the National Trust for Historic Preservation website.
